The redevelopment of West Midtown’s landmark Star Iron and Metal Co. site just took an important step forward.
Project developer The Allen Morris Co. bought the site at 11th Street and Howell Mill Road, a well-known scrap yard and reminder of the area’s industrial roots. The company had an agreement to acquire the property.
It closed on the transaction for the 1.7-acre scrap yard at 1041 Howell Mill Road Feb. 15, paying $8.5 million, according to Fulton County property records.
The Allen Morris Co. is planning a mid-rise office building on the site. It has been in discussions with more than 100,000 square feet of possible tenants, said Nathan Hedges, the company’s director of development for Georgia.
Site work, including demolition of the scrap yard’s existing building, could begin sometime later this year, he said.
The Star Metals project was announced more than a year ago. It’s also slated to include several hundred apartment units on an an adjacent site across from the scrap yard on Howell Mill. Clearing the land for the project’s residential component could begin in May.
